Indian creators keep hitting the same wall: the reel goes viral, thousands of comments arrive, and nothing sells. The reason is simple — comments are where engagement happens, DMs are where sales happen. And by the time you reply by hand, the customer is gone.
The fix is comment-to-DM automation. Here is the whole build, in about five minutes.
What comment-to-DM actually is
You post a reel. The caption says "Comment PRICE for details". When somebody comments PRICE, four things happen:
- The comment is picked up.
- A DM goes to that person with your details and link.
- Who replied is tracked.
- If they reply, your sales flow takes over.
Why it suits Indian brands
- It feeds the reel. Instagram favours posts with lots of comments, and a keyword people know to type produces comments.
- Speed is the expectation. An auto-DM in two seconds beats a manual reply in two hours.
- Nine languages. Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Bengali and the rest — the reply goes out in the language the comment arrived in.
- Lead scoring. Every commenter is scored so you know who is worth a personal reply.
Step-by-step setup
Step 1: Connect Instagram
Accounts → Connect Instagram, through Meta OAuth. Thirty seconds.
Step 2: Pick the post
Automations → New → choose your reel or post. Or pick "all posts" to trigger on any of them.
Step 3: Set the keyword
Keywords like price, info, buy, details. Plurals, typos and capitalisation are handled.
Step 4: Write the DM
Hi {{name}}! Here are the full details 👉 [your-link]
Use WELCOME10 for 10% off, valid 24 hours.
Any questions, just reply — I’m here.
Step 5: Add a follow-up
If they do not reply within 24 hours, one gentle nudge:
Hey {{name}}! You commented yesterday — did you get a chance to look? Happy to help.
Step 6: Turn the safety settings on
Human-like delays, quiet hours, typing indicators. The defaults are already safe.
Step 7: Go live
Activate the automation. Done.
How to read your own numbers
Do not trust anyone else’s conversion rates, including ours — a saree brand and a coaching page behave nothing alike. Watch your own funnel instead, which counts four steps: commented, opened the DM, tapped the link, bought. The gap between two of those steps will be much bigger than the others. That is the one to fix.
Common mistakes
- Too many keywords. Stick to two or three. Never trigger on a word as common as "yes".
- Generic copy. Use {{name}}.
- No follow-up. Plenty of conversions happen on the second or third message, not the first.
- Ignoring language. An English DM to a Tamil comment usually gets no reply.
One more trigger worth using
Story mentions. Same setup, except the trigger is "Story Mention" — somebody shares you, and they get a thank-you with a code instead of silence.
