12 rate-control rules for safer Instagram automation in 2026

Most automation tools get accounts restricted. These are the 12 rules ViralDM follows to keep an Instagram account healthy - and the one promise no tool can make.

You have heard it: "I used Instagram automation and my account got banned." That does happen — when the tool is the wrong kind. With the right rules, automation is a great deal safer than its reputation. Here are the twelve rules ViralDM works to.

Rule 1: The official Instagram API, no scraping

Only the Instagram Graph API. No password sharing, no scraping, no pretending to be the mobile app.

Rule 2: A daily cap, not a burst

Sending is capped per day per account and throttled well under the platform ceiling. The cap is the thing that protects you — a tool with no cap is a tool with no plan.

Rule 3: Human-like delays

Instant, identical replies are a pattern. A randomised delay between replies breaks it.

Rule 4: Typing indicators

A "typing…" indicator before the reply, on by default.

Rule 5: Quiet hours

Nothing is sent between midnight and 7am IST. Comments that arrive in that window are not dropped — they are held and delivered when the window opens.

Rule 6: Vary the message

The same text sent to a hundred people looks like what it is. Keep several variations of every template; the spinner rotates them for you.

Rule 7: Handle blocks and reports

If somebody blocks or reports you, sending to that person stops immediately.

Rule 8: Cool down after a spike

If a reel takes off and a burst of comments lands, replies are paced out rather than fired together.

Rule 9: Stay under Meta’s hourly cap

Meta publishes the ceiling itself: an account can send 750 private replies an hour to comments on its posts and reels. ViralDM stops at 600 an hour, and anything over that waits for the next hour instead of being dropped. There is no month-long warm-up — a newly connected account can answer a busy reel on day one, with the pacing, cooldown and working hours above still in force.

Rule 10: One person, one message a day

A 24-hour cooldown per recipient. Whatever else happens, the same person does not get DMed twice in a day.

Rule 11: Watch for warnings

If an account starts failing repeatedly, it is paused automatically and you are notified — before Instagram does the pausing.

Rule 12: No password sharing, OAuth only

ViralDM never asks for your password. Connection happens through Meta OAuth, and tokens refresh on their own.

Things you should do on your side

  • Keep engaging manually too — comments and likes alongside the DMs.
  • Post stories regularly. An active account looks like an active account.
  • Turn on 2FA for your Instagram account.
  • Keep your recovery email and phone up to date.

These twelve rules exist to keep your sending inside the platform’s limits. Be clear about what that is and is not: no third-party tool can promise that Instagram will never restrict an account. Anyone who does is selling you something.
