This is how a small Indian seller actually works: the conversation happens in the DM, you say "please GPay", the buyer sends a screenshot, and at night you sit down matching screenshots against who sent what. It works — but the counting goes wrong and confirming an order takes hours.
All of it can be automated, with no website and no payment gateway.
The flow
- The buyer asks about a product in the DM, or comments a keyword on a reel.
- They get a product card — photo, price, and a pay link with the amount already filled in.
- Tapping it opens GPay, PhonePe or Paytm with your UPI ID and the amount already set.
- They pay and send the screenshot in the DM.
- The amount, UTR and time are read from that screenshot, matched against the order, and the order is marked paid.
- A confirmation DM goes out automatically — with the file attached, if it is a digital product.
Compared with a gateway
- Fee: the money goes straight into your UPI. A gateway takes about 2% plus GST.
- Settlement: UPI is instant. A gateway takes two days.
- Setup: enter a UPI ID, done. A gateway wants KYC and documents.
- Website: not needed at all — the product card lives in the DM.
One thing you give up in exchange: a gateway confirms payment by itself, while here a screenshot is being read. So any screenshot that does not match goes into a "needs checking" list rather than being marked paid on its own.
Setup: 15 minutes
1. Add your UPI ID
Put your UPI ID and name on the Payments page. That name is what the buyer sees in their app, so use the one your business goes by.
2. Create the products
Name, price and one clean cover photo for each. The cover photo is not only for display — it earns its keep later.
3. Attach it to an automation
In the keyword automation, attach the product card: a "PRICE" comment sends the card and the pay link.
4. Turn screenshot verification on
If it matches, the order confirms. If it does not, it lands on the Payment Verify page for you to look at. Every payment also builds an evidence pack, which is what you want in a dispute.
"How much is this one?" — recognising a product from a photo
Indian buyers often do not type the full name. They screenshot your story and write "how much is this one?" So one more piece helps: the photo they sent is matched against your product photos and the right card goes back. If it is not certain, it offers two or three options; if it is thoroughly confused, it sends nothing — a wrong card in a DM costs you trust.
Things to watch
- Put your refund rule in the DM itself. It ends the argument before it starts.
- A screenshot is not hard proof. For a large order, confirm inside your own UPI app — which is exactly why the manual review list exists.
- Deliver digital products immediately. The file should go the moment it is paid, or you will spend the evening answering "when will I get it".
- Keep the counting in one place. Store orders, UPI verifications and DM links should show up together, or you will never know your real revenue.
Who this suits
Saree and kurta sellers, home bakers, jewellery, coaching slots, digital PDFs and preset packs — anything with an average order between Rs 300 and Rs 5,000 that sells in the DM. For high-ticket or subscription billing, a real gateway is better.
